What Small Business Wants Most From Their Fan Page

The ‘LIKE’ button – your main objective as a small business owner is to get everyone who comes to your Fan Page to click on it, and create “Fans”. Now you may be thinking, “Wait! I thought the thing I wanted most was sales? I thought the objective was to build my business and my profits? What does a LIKE button or ‘fans’ have to do with that?” Glad you asked!

Traditional 20th century marketing required small business owners to fight for every customer they got. If you weren’t continuously paying out the nose for various forms of advertising and putting yourself in front of potential customers, you were invisible. Not so in the 21st century. While you obviously still need to position yourself in front of your customers, you no longer have to do it by throwing money at an ad that may, or may not, even be effective. Enter: The ‘LIKE’ Button.

The LIKE button on your Fan Page has a magic-like-viral-effect to it! When someone LIKE’s your page, everyone on their newsfeed sees that. Statistics show, on average, every FB user is connected to 80 other users. So, let’s use a low number like “20”,…let’s say you acquire 20 fans on you page – 20 fans x’s 80 viral connections = 1600 people you’re company has just been exposed to who otherwise wouldn’t have known you existed. So you take every “1” LIKE and x’s it by 80. And what was the cost of exposing your business to those additional 80 people per fan? Nothing. Now that’s what you call marketing on steroids! Every small business owners dream-come-true!

Marketers say the top two benefits of social media marketing are increasing exposure and increasing traffic. A significant 85% of marketers indicated that their social media efforts have generated more exposure for their businesses. Increasing traffic was the second major benefit, with 69% reporting positive results. (Source: Social Media Marketing Industry report 2012)

Take Away: Growing a fan base takes a little time and patience, but never has a small business owner had a better marketing venue than what social media has to offer! Talk about getting the biggest bang for the buck, Social Media marketing is at the top of the list. The good news for small business owners is, the action required to turn visitors into “Fans” takes nothing more than the skills you already excel at; being personable, engaging, and treating customers like the highly-valued people they are.

In the next post we’ll talk about ‘the value’ of a Fan.
